Shuttle bus starts next week

30 Jun, 2008 07:19 PM
PUBLIC transport in Taree is about to enter a new era with a shuttle bus to link services and amenities within the city.

The NSW Ministry of Transport Department has funded Eggins Comfort Coaches to operate the Taree City Shuttle Bus on Tuesdays and Thursdays with four services a day between 10.25am to 3.15pm.

This new service will be a loop route around the city centre covering the retail precinct with stops at Manning Hospital, Taree railway station, Storm Village, the cinemas, aquatic centre and Taree Library.

This new service will provide access to the services and facilities within Taree City to those who do not have their own transport, especially people who travel to Taree by bus, and resolves the problem for them of how to move about once they are in the city.

The service will commence next Tuesday and operate for 15 months before it will be assessed to determine if it will continue.

The service will be launched next Monday at 10.30am at Fotheringham Park, Taree.

Greater Taree City mayor Eddie Loftus said the provision of this new bus service will allow people to access services and facilities throughout Taree and is a great addition to the public transport network within the city of Taree.

“This new service is a further improvement to travel options within the council area and an opportunity to reduce the reliance on the use of cars in the city area.”

Greater Taree City Council’s access advisory committee chairman, Cr Mal Marks, said the service will be of immense assistance to those with mobility difficulties as it will allow them to travel around Taree by bus.

Members of the public are invited to attend the official launch.

A political token. Come on be serious. Look at it. 2 days. 5 hour window each of those 2 days. That makes it 10 hours per week. One feels the Council is handing out peanuts to feed the peasants (residents). Do it properly. Operate it over more days and/or for longer periods and then study the results. As for the bus stop at the Storm Village I could ask another question. Has the Council looked at the problem of the deterioration of the road there and have they ever looked at the possibility the road deterioration is being exacerbated by subsidence from the old quarry alongside it? Now perchance therein might lie another tale.
