AN array of banners and hats stating 'Save Old Bar Beach' were on show at Wednesday's ordinary meeting of council, as members of the Old Bar Beach Sand Replenishment Group staged a silent protest.
The protest was a reaction to council's decision not to prepare a report on the sand replenishment group's plan to utilise a series of artificial groynes to prevent further erosion at Old Bar Beach.
Wednesday's protest was the group's second in three months.
"On August 19, on presentation of a petition with over 1300 names, it was written in the minutes that a report would be prepared and submitted to a forthcoming meeting of council," the group president Elaine Pearce said.
"We relieved a letter from council dated October 16 stating that a report will not be prepared until the Coastline Management Plan, currently being prepared by consultants Worley Parsons, is adopted by council."
Ms Pearce believes time is not on the group's side.
"We are endeavouring to protect $300 million dollars of property ? government and private ? infrastructure, the environment, the tourist industry of Old Bar and Taree and resultant commercial trade.
"Our first submission to council was January 5, then March 11, then April 28. That is 10 months.
"In that time a further 10 to 12 metres of foredune has been lost in several parts of Old Bar Beach ? but not the Rose Street entry where our gabion wall is holding together a very healthy beach enjoyed every day by many people."
