Roads repair funding criticism

08 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
THE National Party has admitted it will not fully fund the repair of Greater Taree City Council roads damaged by last year's floods.

Member for Lyne Rob Oakeshott said the revelation was made at a roads forum in Taree last week, where National Party MP Stephen Bromhead admitted the state government would fund only 50 to 75 per cent of Greater Taree City Council's road repair bill.

"The Manning's road network is collapsing. Motorists expect their local MP to fight for them, not happily deliver the state government's message that it won't fund the full cost of the council's natural disaster request," Mr Oakeshott said.

"More than 400 sites were damaged during the floods of June last year and yet the National Party not only seems to think paying half the bill is acceptable but an eight-month delay on funding approval also is OK.

"It leaves the community feeling pretty cynical about receiving proper state government assistance arising from last week's floods."

Mr Oakeshott has called on the NSW Premier, Mr Barry O'Farrell, to intervene.

"I ask Mr O'Farrell as Premier, and someone who knows the Manning, to step in and help clean up this mess," he said.

"For some reason, the National Party seems to be on a go-slow on this important matter.

"The funding needs to come through as soon as possible, and it must be the full $19 million - not $9 million, or $14 million.

"Last June's floods, the worst in 30 years, caused significant damage to the local road network and ratepayers shouldn't be left with the repair bill," Mr Oakeshott said.

Mr Oakeshott, just how much did the previous ALP State government contribute to the repair and replacement of damaged roads in the Manning during their 15 plus years in government? The roads in the Manning have been in a constant state of decay in the 20 plus years I have lived here. Maybe you can convince your ALP pals in Canberra to give some assistance!!

Good old "never let the facts get in the way of a good story" Ryan blesses us with another gem!! (that was sarcasm, Tony)

Q: Who neglected the Pacific Highway for more than ten years?

A: The Howard regime.

Q: Who has spent more than double the money on the Pacific Highway in less than half the time of the Howard regime? (this is an easy one)

A: The ALP.

So how much money did the last Coalition state govt spend on the Mannings roads Mr Ryan???Hmmmm???

Why knock Mr Oakeshott when hes having a go for us??

The roads were damaged in June, and half of them were given botch patch ups where massive pot holes formed. Then we copped another downpour last week with flooding, and more damaged roads or sections of the road where pot holes that were repaired previously had been reformed. As a result last week, I got a flat tyre from hitting a pot hole in the dark rain that I couldn't see. Perhaps if the roads had been fixed properly in the first place...

Republic, what are you going on about? The story is about MANNING AREA ROADS, not the Pacific Highway. My question is valid. How much did the NSW ALP government contribute to the cost of maintaining or replacing roads in the Manning area? Mr Oakeshott was "knocking" the National Party, was he not? As for not letting the facts get in the way of a good story, at least you can identify me. I at least have the courage to use my name and not hide behind some "Pen Name".

I've got to agree with Rob Oakeshott- Does Mr Bromhead forget he is OUR local MP and not a mouthpiece for the Governement. !! Our roads are the Vaile & Turner legacy and a wake up call to all those who constantly vote for the Coalition- Thankfully we're slowly getting some attention thanks to Rob oakeshott.

Hi Tony,

You stated that Mr Oakeshott should ask his ALP pals for assistance, therefore my comment is valid. You just didnt like it because i showed up the Howard regime for under spending. Simple.

My question re funding between previous state governments is also vaild as it will give a comparison (your timeline). Also fairly simple.

I use a pseudonym for a good reason. Happy to explain later. To infer that i lack courage....well what about one of your recent postings, i wouldnt classify that as particularly courageous.

Have a good weekend! ( and i'm not being sarcastic)

Republic, there is no point in trying to conduct a conversation via this forum, if you do not read what I actually wrote. I did not say my question was valid because Rob Oakeshott should ask his ALP pals for assistance, I said it was valid because I was commenting on grants to GTCC for Manning local roads, not the Pacific Highway. Just like the recent posting to which you refer, you did not read this one properly either. Thank you, I will have a good week-end and trust you do also.

Tony Ryan,

Re not reading postings properly.

Well Tony if thats the case, all bar one of the reply commenters on your "boat people" tirade, didnt read your post properly either!!!

The numbers speak for themselves.

However, i'll give you the benefit of the doubt on that notorious comment and just put it down to you having a bad day.

Republic, at the risk of having you misrepresent what I actually wrote I made further comment in which I said it was not about he boat people themselves, it was about the fact that the ALP reopened the flood gate which led to further costs to the taxpayers, money which otherwise could be used on roads etc. I note the government wants another $880 Million for the support of the boat people. The ALP has wasted so much money on failed schemes, money which could and should be much more wisely spent. Roads are only one item lacking funding because of Federal ALP waste.
