Renewed calls for locations for Aboriginal burial sites

30 Mar, 2011 12:00 AM
THE Taree Family History Group has renewed its call for information about any burial sites of Aboriginal people in the Manning Valley.

The group is compiling a new book recording the names and locations of burial sites of Aboriginal people and needs the community's help.

Spokesman Ian Macleod said Taree Family History is a new group and the book would be one of its first projects.

He said the group had received many requests from Aboriginal people and their descendants for information about their families, but sadly much of this has never been recorded.

The Taree Family History Group hopes to change all that and needs information from the public to make the publication as detailed and accurate as possible.

"We already have a lot of information on burial sites of Aboriginal people at Redbank and Purfleet cemeteries, but there must be many more out there, some possibly unmarked," Mr Macleod said.

"We want to expand beyond just those two cemeteries and get as accurate a coverage of Aboriginal family history as possible."

The group is hoping to compile the information as quickly as possible, so the history of our area is not lost for future generations. For more information or to inform the group of a burial site contact Mr Macleod on 6551 0021.
