Pool celebrates its birthday

21/11/2008 8:04:00 AM
ONE of Wingham's much loved community facilities, the Wingham Pool, is celebrating its 40th birthday tomorrow (Saturday) from 10am till 2pm.

Celebrations will include a sausage sizzle, pool inflatables for the kids and a display of memorabilia tracing the history of the pool.

The current Wingham Pool was opened in 1968 and replaced the original pool, known affectionately by locals as the 'Duck Pond'.

Wingham Municipal Council allocated 250 pounds for the construction of the forty by twenty foot original pool, to be built on the reserve near Cedar Party Creek Bridge. Construction of the original pool began in the summer of 1944-45.

The 'Duck Pond' was well loved by locals and as Wingham grew, so did the need for a larger swimming facility.

In December 1950 a poll was conducted on the matter of new swimming baths for Wingham. The majority of those who voted were in favour of the new pool's construction.

Three years later in 1954 a petition, signed by 550 children with 159 written promises of voluntary labour by parents and teachers, requesting the construction of new swimming baths, was handed to council.

The highly anticipated new 33 metre pool was constructed towards the late 1950s. The pool underwent extensive renovations and was extended to its current 50 metre length from 1964 and completed in 1968.

Forty years later Wingham Pool continues to be a highly valued community facility. Every day locals begin arriving at 6am for early morning laps. Local school groups rely on the pool for their swimming tuition programs and carnivals. There is also swimming club on Wednesday nights, water polo on alternative Tuesday nights, weekly coaching of senior, junior and mini swim squads, not to mention general recreational use after school and on weekends.

The pool can also be booked for birthday parties and other civic events.

Garry Smith, supervisor of Wingham Pool, feels that the Wingham community values the pool as a community resource,

"There have been significant improvements over the years. We have installed shade structures, upgraded the kiosk and recently painted the men's and ladies change rooms.

"When making changes we are mindful of preserving the traditional appearance of the pool facility. There is always a great sense of community among pool users and we are looking forward to the birthday celebrations this weekend," Gary said.

The whole community is invited to share in the 40th birthday celebrations on Saturday. Bring your sunscreen and a hat and enjoy a sausage by the pool. For further information contact Gary Smith at Wingham Pool on 6553 4313.

Is my memory playing tricks on me or was the pool extension to 50m not completed until about 1977 (not 1968 as stated in your article)?
