PCYC does lunch

09 Feb, 2010 09:10 AM
TAREE Police and Community Youth Club's (PCYC) 'word of mouth' lunch program launch last Friday was a huge success.

Representatives from the business community and friends of the PCYC gathered for a two course lunch, prepared by hospitality trainees under the tutelage of French chef Laurent Gonford.

The menu for opening day was chicken breast with fresh herbs wrapped in filo pastry complemented by a French mustard sauce, served with chips, salad and garlic bread, followed by hand-made creme caramel dessert.

The lunches are being promoted as being served and enjoyed in less than an hour, so people can have a quality two-course meal in their lunch break for $12.

Within minutes of being seated, a waitress came to our table and offered a selection of softdrinks.

Shortly after taking our drink orders two plates of fresh garlic bread, bursting with natural flavour, were bought to our table.

After the drinks were served, we were asked if we would like our lunch to be served now or later?

Feeling hungry, our table opted for now and in less than two minutes the main meal was served.

The servings were more than ample and the fresh herbs of thyme, oregano, basil, tarragon and Russian tarragon enriched the chicken breast while the filo pastry, coated in a hand-made French mustard sauce complemented the flavours perfectly.

Comments from the table included: "This is French flair". People said they would expect to pay around $18 for this type of meal, not $12 which includes barista-made coffee or dessert.

The main meal was served with home-made potato chips and freshly prepared salad. The salad included grated beetroot, onions, capsicums, tomato and mixed salad leaves ? not at all your budget-style side.

With hardly any space left, no-one on the table could refuse the dessert, which arrived as soon as our mains plates had been cleared.

The creme caramel was served with a generous dollop of cream garnished with fresh mint leaves and crystallised angel hair toffee pieces. The perfect ending to a quality meal.

Representatives from the North Coast TAFE in Taree, Margaret Gardner and Catherine Calvin complimented the trainees for preparing "first class, a-la-carte" meals and described the meals as an "absolute bargain".

Ms Gardner said the use of local fresh produce shone through. She described the food and waiting standard as excellent.

Ms Calvin said: "With Laurent as a trainer you know the food is never going to be bad," adding that it was great to enjoy a quality meal and know at the same time you're supporting young people developing their work readiness.

The PCYC 'word of mouth' Friday lunch specials are available from midday each week. Bookings are essential.

The menu changes each week and dishes range from seafood to beef. The menu has been set for a month in advance so people can choose which day they would like to book for lunch.
