No sharks but there was one snake

9/01/2009 9:15:00 AM
WHILE there haven’t been any shark sightings reported off Manning beaches so far these holidays, a brown snake caused some consternation at the back beach at Saltwater earlier this week.

It is thought the snake made its way out of the lagoon to the beach, where around 100 patrons were beating the 30 plus degree heat. The snake’s presence attracted a n interested crowd although all kept a safe distance.

A National Parks ranger was at Saltwater Reserve and he was summoned to the beach to relocate the snake away from the public.

Meanwhile the hot conditions this week resulted in big crowds flocking to area beaches. However, council’s lifeguard supervisor Mark Fisher said no major incidents have been reported from those beaches that are patrolled.

“The sea conditions have been favourable,’’ Mr Fisher said.

“I’d say the crowds have picked up 100 percent since Christmas. This is the busiest season we’ve had for a couple of years.’’

Mr Fisher reminds beach goers to swim between the flags. He added that there are no lifeguards at either Diamond Beach at Hallidays Point or Saltwater this year.
