‘Nationals must come clean on mining stance’

18 Oct, 2011 08:00 AM
Lyne MP Robert Oakeshott says the National Party must come clean on its coal seam gas stance in the Manning and Gloucester valleys.

Mr Oakeshott said he was concerned that a local community action group, the Barrington-Gloucester-Stroud Preservation Alliance, would not be allowed to give evidence at the NSW Legislative Council Inquiry into CSG in Taree on October 31.

“There are two State National Party MPs who were very recently elected talking up their concerns about coal seam gas, and their belief in community,” Mr Oakeshott said.

“Well, here is the chance for Steve Bromhead and George Souris to actually do something that meets those two pre-election commitments.

“Post-election, they did not make submissions to the NSW Parliamentary Inquiry, when they should have, and now they seem to be denying local groups the chance to present to that inquiry.”

Mr Oakeshott said he was concerned the NSW Government’s economic strategy, as outlined in its State plan, was to increase the value of mining production in NSW by 30 per cent by 2020 and to ‘attract petroleum and mineral exploration investment in under-explored areas of NSW’.

“The emerging question for Mr Bromhead and Mr Souris is, ‘are you going to put your community first, or are you going to put your political party first?’ “ he said.

here we have our elected MP trying to shift the responsibility of food and water security to the state Nationals. The security of our nation lies with the federal government. Raising taxes is also in the hands of the federal Government. If canberra deems this type of mining could be damaging to the environment. Then it should show strength and stop it. l. The three will show their ability in the vote they cast on behalf of Party or Electorates

It's a great pity that Rob Oakshott didn't come clean with his electorate prior to the last election ie that he was a Labor man when all's said and done, in which event he wouldn't have been elected. I'm mighty tired of this fellow's offerings of gratuitous advice as to how other folks should be running their race, given his track record.

"and now they seem to be denying local groups the chance to present to that enquiry".

Could you go a little bit further and explain this observation please?

I would like to know how they have done this.

It is extremely important to understand this issue.

None of us want to damage our enviroment.

Just spell out how they have " seem to be denying " for me and probably a few other interested people.

So Mr Bigshott why is it just a Nationals problem. You support the worst government and leadership this country has ever seen so why don't you call for their policy on Coal Seam gas. Remember it was the FEDERAL govt that announces the gas export deals isn't it!!!!!.

Good on you Rob.

You are a decent bloke, who has the guts to stand up for what he believes in.

You are the long over due breath of fresh air that this electorate deserves.

And where do the the Nationals and their empty headed suporters stand on this issue?? Hmmmm....suprisingly quiet!! How strange??

Rodger, on CSG/Mining the issuing of licensing rights (exploration and mining), is vested in State governments. They are also the recipients of the subsequent wealth returns via royalties.

The Mining Rent Resources Tax is a federal attempt to look at broader returns to the Australian community in those states and regions that do not benefit from the 'mining boom'...but they (federal govt) do not have the power to stop this.

So the power IS vested in the State Liberal/National coalition and the Federal member is quite rightly exercising the only option he has...pressuring them to stop it
