Men’s health on grass conference agenda

29 Jul, 2009 09:05 AM
Stress levels in agricultural industries are going through the roof, and next month’s ‘Grass is Greener’ conference in Taree will seek to address the alarming statistics.

For the first time, a female presenter, Tammy Farrell, will tackle the serious subject of personal health and wellbeing – more specifically men’s health.

Known for her highly acclaimed recent classes with Hunter Valley coalminers and her appearance on television’s ‘10 Years Younger in 10 Days’, Tammy adds her own brand of humour to what can be a daunting and delicate subject, in her ‘Tool Box Talks’.

Most men look after their cars. They look after their trucks and tractors. They make sure their fishing rods are maintained and their golf clubs are in order. But when it comes to their own health and wellbeing, they don’t look after themselves, Tammy says.

She offers simple changes that can literally mean the difference between life and death.

Thursday August 6 – the day she appears at the ‘Grass is Greener’ conference in Taree – is also the day of the release of her long-awaited book, ‘Real Man’s Tool Box’, described as a DIY health manual for men.

“It will in effect be a book launch as well, when she addresses our conference,” Taree convenor Ray Johnston said.

Tammy is a registered nurse who has often been called on by males to demystify the medical world.

Her subjects include men’s sexual health, nutrition, heart disease, sleep apnoea, fatigue management, alcohol abuse, smoking, prostate cancer and depression.

Ray Johnston says latest research shows agriculture to be at the top of the list of stress-related industries, which is why Tammy’s talks to the conference delegates will be crucial.

“Coastal farmers are suffering from regular floods, others across the range are still in a long drought; milk prices are dropping... stress levels are high right across agriculture.

“Yet most men in agricultural industries hide what is happening to them, on the inside. Mental health workers have now given our industry workers a high risk rate.”

Tammy’s address at Manning Entertainment Centre on day 2 of the conference sessions, Thursday August 6, promises to be a highlight on the wide ranging program.
