Lining up for Lotto

30 Jun, 2009 08:53 AM
TONIGHT'S $90 million Oz Lotto draw has newsagents run off their feet.

Peter Precians, manager of Marketplace News in Taree City Centre, said he has had to employ extra staff to keep up with the line of hopeful winners.

"It's full-on," he said. "People came in early (Monday morning) and now (at 11am) they are lined up."

"And sales for a Sunday were double.

"Everybody has that dream... especially in these tough times," he said. "People want to be in it to win it."

He said this is the largest Lotto draw in Australian history.

And people are buying anything from one game to a Megapick.

"There is no set thing.... but the Megapick for $25.30 is the most popular," he says.

And buyers are willing to spend in a bid to increase their odds of winning.

"People who bought a Lotto ticket on Friday or the weekend are coming back now they have some more spare change."

NSW Lotteries has compiled nine hot tips for entering the $90 million OZ Lotto draw:

1. Make sure you have an entry ? it's pretty obvious, you have to be in it for a chance to win it.

2. Get in early ? not all agents will be open when selling for the draw closes at 7.45pm. Internet selling closes at 6.30pm.

3. Play the easy way ? the easiest way to play is a randomly selected autopick entry. The most popular entry will be a 24 game OZ Lotto Megapick at just $25.30.

4. Protect your prizes by joining NSW Lotteries Players Club ? that way you will get a call with news of the win if you pick up a big prize.

5. Join or form a syndicate ? syndicates allow players to share the cost of buying more game combinations with family, friends or work mates.

6. Put it in writing ? document any syndicate agreement and keep a copy of syndicate members' names, confirmation they have paid, and the numbers entered before the draw. There's a handy Syndicate Planner to download from the NSW Lotteries website (nswlotteries.com.au).

7. Check the odds ? to help you make an informed choice, the odds of playing are on brochures and entry forms in agencies and on the website.

8. Have fun ? the chances for any one individual winning the big prize are extremely slim, so play for fun. Don't forget there are millions of smaller prizes to be won in the same draw.

9. Play sensibly ? you can be in the draw for as little as $1.10 for one standard game.
