A MORE confident James Johnston stepped onto the Australian Idol stage on Sunday singing "The Power of Love" by Huey Lewis and the News, after safely securing himself a place in the final nine.
Looking the most at ease he has been since appearing on the show, James (pictured) owned the stage, winning the approval of all four judges.
Ian 'Dicko' Dickson said: "That's about as confident I have seen you in terms of performing," adding James was heading in the right direction before comparing him to Michael J Fox in his hey day.
"Sexy with trainer wheels," Dicko said.
Guest mentor and 80s music icon, Ross Wilson said he liked how James got on his knees during his performance. "You did some good moves."
James was told by Marcia Hynes that he propelled forward and he shouldn't worry about his nerves which James spoke about in a backstage Idol interview.
"When you're not nervous that's when you should worry," Marcia said.
James said he is a "nervous wreck" before each performance.
"I put a lot of pressure on myself," he said. "I have never in my life been around people this good and it scares me a little bit."
But he is taking on the advice to "forget about it and forget where you came from".
It seems to be working with Jay Dee Springbett saying, "last week you impressed me and this week you did again".
"The more you loosen up the more I believe you," Jay Dee said. "And I think wow, he is pretty good."
