Heavy fine for killing shorebirds

06 Jan, 2009 08:52 AM
A $250,000 FINE can be imposed on anyone who harms or kills a threatened species such as the little terns and other shorebirds that breed in the Manning River's two entrances.

Unfortunately the following issues related to visitors and locals continue to jeopardise the survival of these species:

* Irresponsible dog owners ignoring the rules by walking past 1080 signage and dog prohibition signage. Dog owners are urged to steer clear of the Mud Bishops/Farquhar area and the Manning Point sand pit north of the 4x4 beach entrance .

* Four wheel drivers not adhering to the 4x4 signs, driving too fast and driving their vehicles onto the exposed sands. It is recommended that during the breeding season and while travelling near the little tern areas that 4x4 drivers drive at 15km/h and keep a look out for little tern 'runners' (the newly hatched chicks, which have a tendency to 'run' shortly after hatching.)

* Kite surfers can scare the endangered shorebird nesting activities particularly when they surf close to the nesting sites in large numbers. All kite surfers are asked to exhibit caution and not to surf too close to the little terns' nesting areas.

NPWS emphasises that it takes the whole community, not just government agencies to ensure the amazing shorebirds continue to visit and breed on this beautiful and unique coastline.

Be assured, says ranger Michael Thomas, that without such dedicated community support, the endangered shorebirds would soon disappear from our area.

A REMINDER:

While enjoying our beaches, locals and visitors are reminded that they can assist in protecting this threatened species by:

* NOT walking their dogs near Little Tern nesting areas and adhering to the signage

* KEEPING clear of all signposted and fenced areas

* DRIVING 4WD vehicles close to the tide line

* KEEPING a keen watch for nests and 'runner' chicks
