THE Manning Alliance yesterday said it believed the NSW Legislative Council's committee inquiring into coal seam gas (CSG) was considering extending its deadline for submissions for a further week.
The consideration of an extension comes as a result of a number of requests for an extension of time from members of the public and the coal seam gas industry, the alliance claimed.
The committee, under the chairmanship of Robert Brown of the Shooters and Fishers Party, will hear evidence from "select" individuals and organisations that have previously presented submissions to the inquiry in a formal hearing in Taree on October 31.
The alliance understands more than 350 submissions have been lodged.
Alliance chairman, Peter Epov has renewed his call for residents of the Manning Valley to take advantage of the opportunity of an extension to the deadline, to put forward submissions to the inquiry.
"(On Wednesday) we received numerous calls from people who had read about the issue in the Manning River Times, and expressed concern to us about the lack of time to put forward submissions to the inquiry," he said.
"Well, here is another opportunity ? a real chance to express our community's concerns directly to the NSW Parliament. Please don't miss this opportunity!
"The moratorium on CSG drilling will lapse on December 31, after that it will be too late!
"The coal seam gas mining industry has clearly shown its intentions to come here with the number of different TV commercials that are now being aired.
"We need to clearly tell the government CSG mining must be stringently regulated, controlled and policed, and should not be imposed upon regions of State significance, such as the Manning Valley, the risks and dangers are just too great!"
Mr Epov is calling on Greater Taree City Council to urgently establish a community consultative committee to harness the talent bank of people within the community to implement a multi-tiered plan aimed at opposing coal seam gas mining in the Manning Valley.
The alliance has produced a draft "submission" which will be made available to residents (on request) to use in part or to fully adopt.
