Country day full of fun

30 Oct, 2009 01:00 AM
FEEL like spending a day in the country? Why not visit Killabakh on Saturday November 7 for a day of fun and festivity during the annual Day in the Country celebrations.

Killabakh proud of its reputation for this excellent annual event that presents art, crafts, fantastic food and elegant entertainment for the young, the elderly and every age in between. The day presents a wonderful opportunity for Christmas shopping and for sampling local products.

Manning Valley artists and craftspeople, as well as ones from further afield, will again be exhibiting and demonstrating on the day. These artisans use a wide range of techniques and tools of trade, together with new or discarded materials and abundant levels of imagination and talent to produce functional, fancy and fantastic creations with visual and practical appeal.

More than 70 artists, artisans and producers of plants and quality local food foodstuffs have been invited to exhibit and sell their wares on the day.

Younger visitors will no doubt be attracted to the Animal Nursery, the kids' activity corner and the piggy-poo lottery. Cornelius the Clown will again be the Pied Piper of Killabakh with his delightful and colourful antics. The Nabiac Donk Club display of static machinery and the antics of world champion whip cracker Fiona Smith will also attract the attention of many.

Keen gardeners will be well catered for with a great range of pots and plants including African violets, bromeliads, iris, daylillies, herbs, vegetables, Australian natives and seedlings. Killabakh Landcare and the Fellowship Group will also be selling plants and produce and are happy to discuss problems and pass on handy hints. Ways to care for our environment and its native animals can be explored from National Parks, FAWNA and Koalas in Care representatives.

This year, photographs and hand painted materials, the product of Joy Fisher's many trips to Africa sponsoring schools and families, will be attractively displayed in the special ambiance of the heritage-listed former Killabakh school. Celebrated local photographers Carol Saul and Judith Conning are also exhibiting.

Visitors will be able to admire, perhaps even make a special purchase of, works by favoured artists including Rod Spicer, David Perks, Cate Macgowan and Bev Perks as well as creations by those who meet weekly in the former school, adjacent to the Hall. Other artists invited to exhibit this year are travelling from Sydney, Port Macquarie, Wauchope and Forster.

Killabakh is also famous for its delicious lunches, desserts, Devonshire teas and great cappuccinos. A selection of cold drinks is also available. You can enjoy a home-cooked meal as you listen to the music of the popular Red Cedar Band. And, of course, the day wouldn't be complete without a barbecued snag or steak sandwich.

So, why not load up the car with family members or friends and head out to Killabakh, just 16 kilometres north of Wingham on the Comboyne Road.
