Council review almost complete

5/12/2008 8:56:00 AM
Greater Taree City Council is nearing completion of its asset condition and financial capability review.

Following a series of asset and financial data workshops, consultation and analysis process, a workshop will now be held with councillors and senior staff on Tuesday, December 16 to discuss preliminary data.

A council spokesperson said the review is one of the most comprehensive health checks the council has ever undertaken and it will inform and provide council and the community with options on how to deal with and manage a significant infrastructure backlog.

The asset condition and financial capability review is a planning tool that will provide the council and the community with a model to assist in optimising the allocation of resources and addressing infrastructure backlogs and priorities for the next 20 years.

Council staff have been busy completing the research phase of the project by gathering a wide range of data for analysis.

Greater Taree City Council manager of finance, Carol Currie said the final collection of data will be reviewed over the next two weeks.

“At the conclusion of the data collection and review phase we will be presenting an overview of the findings to the councillors and senior staff on Tuesday, December 16, with sign-off on the data on Friday, December 19.”

The review is being undertaken by Professor Percy Allan and his Review Today team.

As part of the review, an asset analysis is being conducted which looks at the general condition of council’s physical assets (infrastructure); the extent of any infrastructure maintenance and renewal backlogs by major asset classes; the impact of council’s current projected annual renewals and maintenance expenditure on the future asset base condition; and the annual requirement for future renewals and maintenance expenditure over a 20 year period based on review outcomes.

Final outcomes from the review will initially be outlined to the Greater Taree community on January 21 and 22 with follow-up consultation to occur at various locations in the Greater Taree area throughout February and ongoing consultation will occur right up to April in conjunction with the preparation of the 2010-2012 management plan and the community strategic planning framework.
