TAREE Library and Manning Mental Health have teamed up to launch the much anticipated 'Living Library' project to mark Mental Health Week between October 4 and 10.
This year's Mental Health Week theme is "Building Resilience - Sign up, Link in, Get Involved" and the 'Living Library' aim is to achieve just that. A 'Living Library' is similar to a regular library with one difference - the books are living people.
"The 'Living Library' experience is unique," Taree Library community outreach officer Danielle Donnelly said.
"Its purpose is to open up a dialogue between book and borrower and to exchange information about lives and experiences in a relaxed and comfortable setting. Borrowers are given the chance to better understand the lives of people in their community."
'Living Library' was started in 2000 by a non-government youth organisation in Denmark to challenge stereotypes and combat racism. The idea has since spread across the world with libraries and organisations using 'Living Library' projects as a means to break down barriers and promote diversity, understanding and respect.
"There will be a diversity of 'Living Books' available during Mental Health Week at Taree Library. Each 'Living Book' has its own cover and an overview about their story, all of which will be on display this month at Taree Library," Danielle said.
"We have a number of books with amazing stories about overcoming challenges. Some of the living books are individuals whose life experiences include schizophrenia, loss of a loved one, breast cancer survival, adoption, living with learning difficulties, overcoming depression, growing up in a family with disabilities and a life in a convent."
The 'Living Library' project will take place today and this Friday at Taree Library. There will be both morning and afternoon sessions. Members from the community are welcome to borrow a 'Living Book' on these days and are able to pre-reserve a living book by contacting Danielle Donnelly on 6592 5390 or visiting Taree Library. Loan periods are for 30 minutes and involve borrower and 'Living Book' sitting in the library for an informal one-on-one chat. Light refreshments will be available.
