Anti-mining groups meet in Wingham

21 Oct, 2011 08:10 AM
A meeting of the major anti-coal seam gas mining groups in the region will be held in Wingham on Saturday.

On the agenda will be the October 31 Upper House inquiry into coal seam gas to be held in Taree, the establishment of a regional CSG council and future campaigns.

The Manning Alliance will host the meeting at the new CSG information centre on the corner of Wynter and Isabella Streets and representatives from the Barrington-Gloucester-Stroud Preservation Alliance, United Myall Residents Against Gas Extraction, Manning Clean Water Action Group and Camden Haven Anti-Fracking Group will attend.

Manning Alliance chairman Peter Epov said the region’s groups had been co-operating with them on Project Blue (anti CSG mining) and needed to present a strong and united front to government and members of parliament.

“Through this exchange we have started to develop a strong relationship. To be effective we need to work closely together and co-ordinate our activities. We also need to share information, resources and support each other’s activities.”

Mr Epov said politicians and company executives were “constantly making statements and allegations”, relating to community consultation and activities with CSG groups.

“We want to keep them honest and to be in a position to verify these claims quickly by sharing information.”

The Manning Alliance also released a media statement on Thursday highly critical of Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams.

Mr Epov said he was disappointed in the manner Mrs Williams had approached the whole CSG debate and with her recent comments in the Manning River Times and on radio.

“Community consultation is a two way street. It is not just about meeting with groups, preaching the government’s policy line at them and sending them home.

“CSG is a very serious and significant issue with implications to the whole community it’s not about reducing speed limits on some small country road, or calling for applications for some award.

“The consequences of CSG must be respected as should the people who represent the issues and concerns of the community.”
