Another boost for area's education resources

FOUR schools in the Manning Valley have won a share of more than $4 million in federal funding to build new language centres and science laboratories, Member for Lyne Robert Oakeshott has announced.

New language centres will be constructed at Chatham High School and Wingham High School at a cost of $920,000 each. St Clare's High School has received $840,000 to refurbish its science laboratories and the Manning Valley Anglican College at Cundletown has been awarded $1,539,000 to fund a new science and language centre.

Mr Oakeshott said he was particularly pleased to see the focus on languages through this funding round.

"Language skills are a ticket to the world, be it through employment overseas or engagement in a range of differing ways," he said.

"A lot of jobs now require second language skills, so it is a smart option for students to aggressively pursue a second language and to reach a level of competence that allows them to use it when they leave school." Mr Oakeshott said he was not sure why other areas within the Lyne electorate had not accessed this money and would be following this up with the relevant decision-makers. The investment of another $4 million in local schools through the government's School Science and Language Centre initiative takes the total spend on stimulus measures on the Mid North Coast over the $80 million mark.
