MANNING Alliance chairman Peter Epov yesterday welcomed the decision by Greater Taree City Council to take action on coal seam gas drilling.
"Whilst we need a little time to fully assess the implications of (Wednesday) night's unanimous resolution by council, we do acknowledge that this is a very positive and timely step," he said.
"It's really great to have council and particularly each and every councillor recognising, responding and endorsing the strong community rejection for coal seam gas drilling in the Manning Valley."
Mr Epov specifically congratulated mayor Paul Hogan for his leadership in introducing the "mayoral minute" which led to the unanimous vote, and deputy mayor David West for his contribution in strengthening the effect of the resolution.
"I think it is very important for council to apply the precautionary principle to the coal seam gas debate.
"At this stage it is far better and prudent to lock the gate to CSG, until all the implications are fully understood and independently verified.
"We will now be seeking a meeting with mayor Paul Hogan to discuss the next steps."
